The Yellow Wallpaper

I love to read short stories in English, and Gothic and Gore genres are one of my favorites. The Yellow Wallpaper is a very descriptive story about mental disorders and hallucinations. The protagonist of The Yellow Wallpaper is a woman under great emotional stress. A woman in the limit of consciousness, trapped between reality and fantasy. I think this is the best short story I've read in the English language, written by a woman. The way she uses metaphors, the obsession with the color of the wall, and the unexpected ending, make this story one of my favorites. Definitely 5 stars. Highly recommended.

Young Goodman Brown

The story is talking about religion, fear and faith, and how powerful can be as a motivation to go ahead. For Goodman Brown, his motivation is his wife "Faith". The writer uses this word as a symbol, developing the story in a religious town. Brown and his wife are very religious too, and he want to do anything to keep his faith with him. But in the story the devil himself try to turn his faith, and tells Brown that he knew his father and his grand father before him. Also the devil shows to Brown how almost all the town is follow him. Then, when the devil saw that he cannot break his faith, made Goodman Brown to see that his wife is following too. After that, Brown loses the image of purity of his faith, filling his heart of doubts about what he believes and everything that he really cares.

At the end, Brown wakes up and he see that everything was a bad dream, but he couldn't trust in his wife or any of the people of his town. This story teach us about the love and faith, also how easy can be destroy. Goodman Brown, would not be the same person any more. If his wife betrayed their love and their faith, then the winner was only the devil. It is definitively a good story. A little confusing at the beginning but very interesting. Very recommended.

The Storm

The story itself is good, easy to read and understandable . When I read it, I remembered my wife's novels she usually look on TV. I think history points out the deepest desires of the writer. I do not like the ending, because I'm a married man. I love my wife and I think if you love your partner, then do not have to think like that. It was just an adventure, and after that, she felt proud of herself. I'm not sexist or chauvinist, but I think the author is very feminist. I have already recommended this story to my classmates in other classes, even when it is the first time I read a history like that. I guess, I prefer to read creepy stories.

A Rose For Emily

The story is talking about Emily, a young woman of the south. His father did not allow her to have a boyfriend. When he dies, it affects her a lot, and I think that leads her to the edge of madness. Few years later she knows a guy from the north and begins to have a relationship with him. When Emily suspects that he was not going to marry her, probably because she suspected that him prefers to stay in company of other men, she buys poison and kills him. Then she lives for 40 years with the corpse lying in bed and sleeping beside him every night till her decease. I think she was totally insane at this point. This is a creepy story, and never I read something like that. It looks like a horror movie.

On the other hand, and besides of the story itself, it was narrated in an age when the differences between black and white people was very strong, maybe for that reason we see several times the word Negro and not black, when the narrator is talking about Afro-Americans. It is a good story and it has many details and more than one meaning. Definitively recommended.
